Documentation Team Onboarding

Welcome to the Documentation Team! We’re excited to have you on board!

Your first few days will be dedicated to learning how we work at Banno, what we document, and how we document it. To get started, make sure you’ve worked through the general Banno Onboarding page. You’ll also be working through Jack Henry New Employee Orientation, which will give you an overview of how various Jack Henry employee tools and processes work. Of course, there are a few things we do different in the Banno group, so this wiki is your go-to for reading up on our specific processes.

Who we are

The Banno Documentation team is dedicated to creating beautiful, readable technical documentation for all of the products under the Banno Platform. We are a part of Banno’s Product team, working closely with product managers and engineers to detail our products in a manner that’s human while maintaining technical debt. We are part writer, part product manager, part designer, and part engineer as we manage our own documentation sites wile consulting with subject matter experts to ensure our docs are accurate and thorough. We primarily maintain two sites:

Banno Knowledge
Our public-facing knowledge base, documenting every product Banno offers and how each feature therein works. In addition to the public-facing site, an internal version requires JHA auth to access and includes various internal documents for use primarily by our implementation and support teams.
Banno Docs
Our internal documentation site/wiki, this is where we document how our teams work. Unlike the knowledge base, the responsibility for maintaining the docs on this site fall on the entire Banno team, not just us. We do, however, help maintain the site, review pull requests, and remain responsible for upkeep.

Our values

Jack Henry, and the Banno group, strives to put people first, and the Documentation team is no different. From the work we produce to how we interact with each other, we endeavor to always act thoughtfully, with compassion, and from a human perspective.

Our first priority will always be taking care of our team. JHA offers generous PTO, but whenever a personal need goes above and beyond what is outlined in JHA’s policy, reach out to your supervisor and we’ll make sure you’re taken care of. We are passionate about our work and want to put out the best possible products, but never at the expense of our well being.

We also care about our customers. We know that their experience is better when they have robust documentation and can serve their own needs and answer their own questions. We strive to make our documentation accessible, searchable, aesthetically pleasing, and enjoyable to read. Our style guide helps inform our tone, posture, and voice. When in doubt, just remember that our customers are people first. We respect them and are not afraid to communicate with them person-to-person.

At all times, we value diversity in our team. We represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds and seek to ensure our team is welcoming and comfortable for everyone. If at any time you feel that your team is not serving your needs or is not being respectful, you can always reach out to your supervisor. If you feel uncomfortable speaking to them, or if they are a part of the issue, any member of the Banno leadership team will be attentive to your needs. We recommend starting with the Product Team lead, but during your first week you’ll meet most of the leadership team and are encouraged to reach out to anyone that you believe can help.

How we work

Processes

In addition to how JHA works and how the Banno group works, there are a number of processes we follow as the Documentation team. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with them, as you’ll see meetings and events pop up on your calendar over the coming weeks.

Tools

There are a few tools of the trade you’ll have to learn to use. Some of these will be brand new to you and might take some time to learn. That’s totally fine! We expect a learning curve, but you’ll be up and running in no time. As you’re spinning up, our tools guide will help answer your questions and get the right apps set up.
